Crime and Gun Control

Avi Green supports strong gun control laws to keep guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals.
Tim Toomey wrote legislation to weaken the states gun control laws by allowing criminals access to guns (House Bill 1087, 7/11/02).

Toomey believes that ... assault and battery (often the pleaded-down remnant of a more serious charge) should not permanently disqualify someone from a firearms license....
This bill goes much too far.

"It's no time to ease state's gun laws"
The Boson Herald, 7/12/2002

The Massachusetts House acted irresponsibly when it approved a bill that would allow convicted criminals to obtain guns legally. Representative Timothy J. Toomey of Cambridge [is] lead sponsor of this bill.

"Guns in the wrong hands"
The Boston Globe, 7/12/2002

Avi's plan to fight crime and keep communities safer:

  1. Avi supports tough penalties for violent criminals and policies which bring together police, youth workers, educators, and community leaders to make it clear that violence of any type will not be tolerated in our community.

  2. Avi will fight for strong gun control laws to keep guns out of the hands of children and criminals.

  3. Avi will restore and expand funding for after-school programs, youth leadership programs, youth sports, and summer job programs to give young people safe, educational places to go when they are not in school.

  4. Avi will help win funds to make sure police are fully funded and work to strengthen the relationship between our community and police officers.
Crime in our community is too high, and Mr. Toomey hasn't done enough about it.

Fact: The three neighborhoods Toomey represents in Cambridge - Inman-Harrington, East Cambridge, and Area Four - are Cambridge's three highest crime areas, despite Toomey's 12 years in the legislature, including several as Chair of the Public Safety Committee.
